Smartphones take computer power out of the office
By Simon Hendery - NZ Herald
22 August 2008
New uses for cellphones are lifting productivity and cutting costs... This Herald article looks at some of the current issues surrounding business software, including the growing use of mobile computing. Following are some exercepts about Greentree's contribution to the growing mobile arena...
...one of New Zealand's largest business software companies, Greentree, plans to launch a mobile platform in October which will give customers phone-based access to a wide range of its applications.
Greentree chief executive Peter Dickinson says that as well as the productivity advantages of enabling field staff to feed information into the system throughout their working day - rather than having a backlog of data entry to do at the end of it, there is also growing business interest in "remote management" functionality. This is the ability for managers to use their mobile to receive real-time reports summarising important business metrics, or to receive an alert on the device if the office system records an unusual event - such as sales staff lodging a particularly large order at a discount price.

Ryman on top as fast creator of share value
By Tamsyn Parker - NZ Herald
3 July 2008
This recent NZ Herald article headlines long-time Greentree software users, Ryman Healthcare has just made the top of the NZ list for being the fastest creator of share value in the latest BCG report. Having good business processes and financial reporting and analysis functions plays a significant role in creating value in a company and Greentree has no doubt made a valuable contribution to Ryman in this respect...
Ryman Healthcare has topped a list of New Zealand's 15 largest listed companies for being the fastest value-creator for shareholders over the last five years.
Boston Consulting Group's latest value-creators report found the retirement village operator delivered an average total shareholder return of 49 per cent per annum in the five years to the end of 2007.
During that time Ryman's revenue grew at a compounded annual growth rate of 25 per cent while maintaining an ebit (earnings before interest and tax) margin of 18 to 25 per cent - a performance which saw its market value grow from $165 million to $1.03 billion.

Greentree delivers BPM layer
By Randal Jackson - Computerworld Magazine
16 June 2008
Greentree has developed a business process management layer for its software that turns it from a transaction and processing system into a fully fledged business control system.
The software is in beta and will go to general release in August.
"It runs across the entire product and allows both internal and external processes and events to be managed," says chief executive Peter Dickinson.
"You can create any rules. We've gone for a tightly integrated approach. This means rapid development of processes because the product doesn't need to be taught or have any complex mapping built."

Southern man still alive — and kicking
By Jo Bennet - Computerworld Magazine
3 June 2008
The big goodbye bash for 500 that recently saw Robbie Deans, the former All-Black and Crusaders coach who has now taken on the Wallabies, farewell these shores show the ditch between the two islands is almost as deep as the one to the west.

Paul French, software company Greentree’s communications chap, revealed that the divide still runs very deep indeed. Among the banter at the event, the MC told the partisan Southern Men at the bash that the only three northerners allowed in the room were Greentree’s Graham Hill (Greentree was the event’s sponsor) and honorary southerners Colin Meads and the Mad Butcher.

SellAgence is geared up for new business in 2008
Grocers Review Magazine
May 2008
Technology enhancements will help deliver superior service to brand principals and trade customers.
“We feel the technology enhancements within the business have been absolutely critical.”
Sales and marketing agency SellAgence Ltd has completed an intensive year of technological investment, to create a platform for growth in 2008 and beyond.
The enhancements will also help deliver superior service to its brand principals and trade customers, and include a new ERP system and sales reporting, an e-commerce solution, enhanced process mapping and the roll out of PDA devices to the SellAgence field team.
In March 2007 the first major change was completed. To create an agile business system environment, SellAgence, in conjunction with systems parter Verde, implemented Greentree to replace its existing tier-one ERP system.
Greentree provided the ability to rapidly and efficiently add new principals and this was immediately put to the test. The system integration of the Kodak business began as soon as Greentree went live and trading commenced on 1 May - just 60 days later - an impressive result considering the scale and complexity of the business....

Getting a handle on the business
By Darren Greenwood - Computerworld Magazine
18 January 2008
This recent article looks at "off-the-shelf" financial management information systems (FMIS) and how easy they are to use and maintain. Greentree users SellAgence are companies interviewed, there are also some comments from Greentree's CEO Peter Dickinson.
““The cost of ownership has plummeted [since implementing Greentree].”
Mark Emirali, IT Manager - SellAgence
While some firms go for larger tier-one systems, marketing company SellAgence switched from Oracle to Greentree, feeling such a large system was “overkill” for their needs. IT manager Mark Emirali says the company’s whole IT system was overhauled, not just ERP and switching to Greentree delivered more efficiencies.
On seeing some Greentree sites, company executives were won over by Greetree’s ease of use, ability to migrate from one system to another, and ability to drill down for information. Verde was chosen as implementation partner.
Greentree was delivered “out of the box” and since its implementaion in early 2007 has been cost effective, needing fewer staff to support it. It had similar functions to the old Oracle system and has also been able to expand to cope with major new clients, such as Kodak.
“The cost of ownership has plummeted,” Emirali says.
SellAgence is also integrating Greentree with electronic data interfaces and data warehosusing tools, with other modules planned for the future. It has also virtualised Greentree onto other servers, boosting its disaster recovery capability.

Global brand management company SellAgence gains a world of efficiency with Greentree
iStart Magazine
December 2007
The Auckland-based FMCG brand services business found switching to Greentree reduced cost of ownership and improved its responsiveness to customers’ needs...
“Greentree was a good fit for our business with most of the functionality there from day one, so we’re looking to drop a zero off the cost of ownership.”
Global brand marketing management company SellAgence partners with client companies to design and apply the service elements required to maximise their category and brand growth in the New Zealand operating environment.
SellAgence has more than 95 full-time and part-time employees to service the New Zealand market and provides market management services for global brands, such as Procter & Gamble, Ferrero and Kodak, managing around $250 million in retail sales for clients.
It had been running a tier-one ERP system but needed to trim IT costs without reducing functionality.
Mark Emirali, SellAgence’s IT systems manager, explains that with a staff of only around 100 “we needed an implementation partner that exactly understood our business. Greentree partner Verde worked really closely with us and ensured there was no disruption to our business.”

Positive Result for Greentree in UK Lab Test
Report by David Carter - accountingweb.co.uk
October 2007
Greentree is experiencing significant growth in the UK market. This is strongly supported by a review and lab test of Greentree's Financial Suite that has garnered much praise from the UK reviewer...
"Clearly, Greentree is a product of the first rank."
The overall standard of the software is very high, but certain features call for particular praise. Examples are: the use of coding hierarchies (“trees”) for reporting; different screen layouts for entering different types of transaction line; the ability to post to several companies within the one transaction; and the GL Enquiry screen being effectively a window onto the entire GL database.
Greentree offers a full range of modules in addition to the accounting ledgers covered in this review. The developer’s representative showed me the CRM module which looked extremely good, suggesting that a similar standard prevails across the rest of the range.
Greentree is little known in this country [the UK]. However, it should be stressed that it has an established track record as a premier supplier in Australia/NZ.
And as I have argued elsewhere, with the private equity industry now targeting software companies, buying from a long-established and well-known UK vendor is no longer quite the safe option it used to be.
UK reseller Prerogative says it is promoting Greentree to more experienced and therefore more discriminating customers. This makes sense.
"If you are the sort of user who is looking to work with a small supplier of top quality business software, then Greentree can be strongly recommended."

Beyond the Basics
NZ Business Magazine article by Vikki Bland
October 2007
Vikki Bland reports on the major developments in accounting software over the past 12 months and how you can tell when it's time to upgrade.
The way forward
Peter Dickinson, CEO of Greentree, says overly-simplified software systems don't cut it today either - solutions needs to be easy to use, but not feature-light. He says Greentree is to release a full EDI (electronic data interchange) product to enable small businesses to easily connect and do business electronically with bigger buyers; and while electronic commerce has traditionally been the domain of large enterprises, it is smaller businesses that have the most to gain.
"There's a need to provide sophistication without complexity. A lot of small businesses actually do some clever things and they need clever systems to support that. 'Dumbed-down' or really lightweight products usually mean lots of functional gaps and that forces the small business to set-up costly manual processes around the core system."

Greentree readies for growth spurt
The Dominion Post article by Tom Pullar-Strecker
30 July 2007
New Zealand's answer to SAP, Auckland-based enterprise resource planning software vendor Greentree, will invest $1.1 million on improving its software to help meet its ambitious goal of growing its customer base from 800 to 10,000-plus customers.
The company, which employs 42 staff, has received a $350,000 grant from the Foundation of Research, Science and Technology to develop a sophisticated testing tool.
Greentree chief executive Peter Dickinson says the tool will improve the reliability and compatibility of updates and enhancements to its software, making it safer to push these out more regularly.
"We already have very automated systems for deploying updates and we release them every night and that has the fantastic benefit that customers get new features quickly. The downside is if you 'break anything'.
"What we are looking to do with this grant is to put in incredibly clever testing tools so we can put out the most bulletproof software quickly."

Greentree's super-integration clinches buy decision ahead of SAP, Navision & Pronto
July 2007
Estimating, calculating and quoting labour costs are core business activities for Armflame a gas and pipe Installation Company in Queensland Australia. With over 30 field staff covered by multiple pay and award agreements the calculation of labour is complicated. This being the case it’s not surprising that John Todd, Armflame CFO required any new software system to automatically calculate and charge back payroll costs to the job without having to re-key data. What was surprising for John was that only a handful of software vendors had actually figured this out.
Having experienced several software and systems implementations over the years, John knew exactly what he was looking for from a software supplier. The key attributes were the ability of the supplier to quickly grasp requirements and explain in plain-vanilla English exactly how the offering would meet those requirements. John and his team of eight ERP evaluators invited product demonstrations from Greentree, SAP and Pronto but the stand-out performer on a number of key factors was Greentree. Navision was looked at but eliminated as it did not have an integrated payroll system....
“Greentree will give us the ability to add value to our business, control our job cost and improve the way we do business over the long term, but also with some quick short term gains.”

SellAgence opts for local solution over tier-one Oracle
Greentree selected as replacement for E-Business Suite
Computerworld article by Ulrika Hedquist
30 April 2007
SellAgence, a provider of market management services for manufacturers, has ditched its existing Oracle E-Business Suite software and replaced it with a solution from local business management software vendor Greentree.
SellAgence provides market management services for global brands, such as Procter & Gamble, Ferrero and Kodak, managing around $250 million in retail sales for clients.
SellAgence’s new Greentree business software is a full suite, backed by a financial base, and incorporating inventory and a business intelligence system. It was implemented two months ago at a fraction of the cost of the existing system, says Mark Emirali, IT systems manager of SellAgence. The implementation “wasn’t that difficult”, he says, and the new system is simple enough for people to quickly learn how to use, he says. “The learning curve wasn’t huge,” he says.
A number of different drivers led to the decision to replace Oracle with Greentree, says Emirali. Firstly, the Oracle solution was too large for SellAgence, which employs 100 staff, he says...

'Unleash your Business' with GT3
March 2007
Announcing the launch of GT3 – the latest version of the Greentree business- building solution.
Given Greentree’s innovative constant improvement and continuous software release approach, as opposed to the typical industry annual release, you may be asking why create a fanfare around just 1 release, why GT3?
We are celebrating all of the wonderful functionality that has been added to the Greentree product over the last couple of years, some of the examples of this include the new Manufacturing suite (see article on the addition of Quality Control), Approval and Alerts, Web Services Connectivity and the new HR suite. A huge driver in this continuous improvement is our customers' needs and inputs combined with our own innovations.
What better way to celebrate this GT3 achievement than with a great new product look plus many areas of improved visibility of information. Check out Graphs, Data Explorer and Business Intelligence and the many new capabilities in GT3.
And now “back to the future”. The release of GT3 is definitely not a static point and there will be no waiting for the industry typical “next year until the next release”. Greentree is pushing ahead with its continuous product improvements and other major initiatives and GT3 creates the platform for Business Process Management and Mobile Applications – both of which will be progressively rolled out during 2007.
The 'New' Look
Wow, Greentree GT3 introduces a fresh new look that begins when users startup Greentree, through the login screen, background and then on to all the forms and menus. We have designed this new look to be easy on the eye and yet provide a colourful working environment for you to use. But wait, there's more, the impact doesn’t just stop with the look and feel, users will now find colourful graphs on the each of the masterfiles that present visually compelling information specific to that item.
This serves to indicate how Greentree reveals the value beyond just what you see on the surface.

We have also introduced a number of exciting new capabilities in GT3 that will make using Greentree and finding information even easier. For example you will now find a new option on the file menu called "Menu Search". Have you ever been daunted by trying to find a particular menu option? Well now we have made that easier. With ‘Menu Search’ type in the first few letters of the menu option and press enter, and all menu options that contain those letters will be displayed and you can select and action the one you want.

As can be seen from this screen, we have undertaken a complete facelift of Greentree forms. From a new soft graduated colour background for each form and tab, through to colourful and larger set of Icons on the menu bar. And to enhance consistency, all masterfile forms now come standard with transaction launch buttons on the side bar (excludes Fixed Assets which will follow shortly).
Each form will also include a Related Tab to enable visibility and drill through to ALL related activities, from all suites for that item. Also, an Analysis Tab is now available on many of the forms to show 'contextual Intelligence/trends' related to that instance. Note that this can be turned off per user.
A key objective was to incorporate some of the direction of ‘Vista’ while still providing an uncluttered yet functional user experience. We think that difficult dynamic balance has been achieved and we hope you feel the same.

Greentree partners chase Idol crown at boot camp
NZ Reseller News article
October 2006
Participants in business software vendor Greentree's second boot camp for partner sales-people in Albany last month had the chance to be crowned "Greentree Idol".
Channel Manager Graham Hill says the event is restricted to eight representatives, selected to get the most out of the training.
"Those that were there, were left buzzing. They said they'll definitely change how they structure their presentations and it opened a whole new philosophy that they were following," he says.

Attendees were videotaped doing sales presentations and the Greentree Idol winner was judged by a fictitious board of CEOs.
As well as the Idol award, the prize for Most Improved went to Verde marketer Prue Street.
Sales manager of Greentree partner GlobalTech, Tim Ryley, says, "Boot Camp altered our thinking about presentation styles, and put it in the minds of the audience, which is a much different view to what we normally consider - bye bye to Powerpoint presentations."

Accounting Software: Spoilt for support
NZ Business Magazine article by Vikki Bland
October 2006
Six years ago, Les Young, financial controller for plumbing and agricultural supplies distributor Hydroflow, sat back and took a long hard look at the accounting software the company was using.
"It wasn't doing all the things we needed it to do and we had definitely outgrown it," says Young.
Hydroflow, which employs 40 people across two branches in Albany in Auckland and Christchurch, spent six months looking at small business accounting software, reviewed six products in depth, and asked staff what they wanted from new software before deciding on 'homegrown' software brand Greentree.
"It was the best fit in terms of function and flexibility and we were comfortable with the level of support Greentree could offer - the last thing you want is to have accounting software installed and implemented and then not have the support," says Young.
Indeed, Steve Sims, director research and development for Greentree, says it's hard for accounting software vendors to not sell on software fetures when "you love the features" but what small business customers actually want is a software partner who will stick around and take them where they want to go in the future...

Greentree puts boot up resellers
NZ Reseller News article by Louis van Wyk
November 2005
Greentree resellers from New Zealand and Australia invited to a recent sales training event at a retreat in Albany would have been mistaken if they thought they would just spend a few hours in sessions before retiring for drinks by the pool.
Instead they were in for an intensive four-day sales training boot camp, featuring numerous workshop exercises, product quizzes and presentations to a fictitious board of directors, made up of external industry directors.
“There is a reason we called it a boot camp. It was hard work, not a golf junket,” says Graham Hill, Greentree channel manager for Australasia...

Greentree Partner, Endeavour, expands South
July 2005
Endeavour Solutions has a strong commitment to the Greentree product and with more than 80 Greentree customers spread throughout New Zealand, Endeavour has plenty of experience as well. Most of Endeavour's success has been in the Auckland market but with a working relationship established with Christchurch CBA reseller Reid Wray, expansion to the South Island was inevitable.
Endeavour has now opened an office in Riccarton, Christchurch to service CBA customers converting to Greentree. There are four customers in the midst of converting to Greentree; among them a 60-user site with offices in Christchurch, Rotorua and Auckland. Chris Miller, Endeavour's Managing Director said “it was important to meet the needs of the Christchurch customers with local support, not just a remote service from Auckland ”
“We have a number of CBA customers in Christchurch planning upgrades to Greentree over the next 12 months and we felt it was vital to set up a permanent base in Christchurch. ” Customers find that the step from CBA to Greentree is not as difficult as a conversion to a completely new system.
Local CBA consultants have been trained on Greentree and have already started training customers. The official opening of the office is not until September this year, but Endeavour staff are already enjoying their time in the Garden City.

Greentree on Linux
March 2005
Greentree international is pleased to announce the successful delivery of Greentree on the Linux operating system.
Greentree on Linux is an exciting event as it brings the opportunity for cost effective server platform choice to our mid market customers.
Industry analysts indicate that Linux has a growing following and the market is looking for choice. With this new capability we are now well positioned to be able to respond to the growing number of inquiries we are receiving.
Greentree Director of Product Research and Development, Stephen Sims says "The JADE technology behind Greentree provides a robust and reliable development and database environment that they can be used to build applications quickly and efficiently."
JADE's multi platform experience has provided us with the means to deliver Greentree on Linux with remarkable ease. He continues:
"With Greentree on Linux Servers, our Greentree solution now offers even more. Greentree brings to the mid-market organization, a competitively priced business solution with functional capacity beyond any of our competitors and now with multiplatform choice, and the database included is a compelling and cost effective solution."
JADE 6.0 delivers server side components on Linux and with JADE 6.1 delivering a Linux thin client in 2005, we will have a complete end to end platform. Dean Cooper JADE program Manager says:
"Jade is committed to supporting Linux. With JADE we want to make it easy for customers to deliver their applications on Linux and take advantage of this significant opportunity. Greentree are an innovative and successful Jade Partner with compelling business management product."
What are the latest findings?
IDC (International Data Corporation) expect Linux to account for 29% of server shipments this year. Gartner reported in May that revenue of Linux servers grew 57% in the first quarter of 2004. An InformationWeek Research survey reported that nearly 70% of respondents already use Linux. Linux has established credibility and is growing in the business world. Businesses are choosing Linux because of its cost-effectiveness, security, stability, flexibility and performance. A key driver behind the Linux business growth is support from large vendors such as IBM and HP, as this gives customers confidence to move to the platform.

ERP battle moves to mid-market
March 2004
Greentree's Executive Director, Peter Dickinson is interviewed in an interesting article by iStart about emerging trends in the ERP (Enterprise Resources Planning) space in New Zealand...
At Greentree, however, CEO Peter Dickinson says his company has specialised in the mid-market for 20 years, and he suggests Tier 1 vendors may have a lot to learn about the sector. "Because those vendors are large companies in their own right, they presume that mid-size companies are less sophisticated, less demanding and therefore either require less functionality or can easily change their operations to fit the software."
"In fact, the opposite is true - mid-size companies by necessity tend to be nimble, fast-moving and need systems with the same attributes. The only ingredient usually missing in a SME is the massive business volumes, and therefore the revenues, to sustain expensive solutions."

Product Review: Greentree
Software
The Institute of Chartered Accountants
in Australia
August, 2002
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia
carried out a thorough product review on Greentree Business
Software and reported its finding in its IT Chapter
Newsletter. David Robertson, CA-IT Specialist, reviewed
Greentree and in his report he looked at the value added
services of Greentree and the points of difference between
accounting softwares. He reported, "Greentree
software will hold your interest in this regard. The
range of financial processes and integrated CRM and
Workflow modules place the software firmly in the state-of-the-art
category. It narrows the gap for small to medium enterprises
(SMEs) between large Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
systems and mid range software systems relying on third
party add on modules."

Greentree - selling sophisticated
innovation from a classic base
National Business Review

and highly successful product to a more modern, more
powerful product aimed at a market that is similar to
its traditional base but more sophisticated and demanding.
The key is user support at ground level - meaning more
than just running call centres. more...
