Greentree on your iPad? No problem!

Want to access Greentree using your iPad? Simple! Here’s how...

“An iPad is all I need. I put it in my handbag and take it with me everywhere.”

Justine Smyth
Panel Judge
Greentree GAME ON

There’s plenty of debate about whether the iPad is truly able to be used for business processes (see our last blog post Tools or Toy), but the fact is, quite a few businesspeople are using them for work, including several Greentree clients (see our blog post It's My Precious for one example).

Notice we said “for work” rather than “at work”, since the advantage of having an iPad is that you can be online wherever you happen to be. However, using the iPad in your office does have some benefits; if you’re in a meeting and your office has WiFi, you could instantly access important data, for example.

Chris Alp, one of the judges for Greentree GAME ON, uses his iPad for just about everything. “My wife’s got my old one and if there’s an iPad 3 my son’s going to be very happy because he’ll get my old one!” he says. Another judge, Justine Smyth, agrees. “An iPad is all I need. I put it in my handbag and take it with me everywhere,” she says.

So if you’re a Greentree user with an iPad, and want to access Greentree’s various functions on it, how do you go about setting it up? Read on:

Things you will need:

  1. Apple iPad with network connectivity
  2. Remote Desktop software for iPad
  3. Windows PC / Server running Greentree client and accessible via RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol)
  4. Remote access to the Windows PC / Server running Greentree.

To enable remote access to your Greentree environment you need to have a Greentree system already running and a Greentree client connection already configured to use. The easiest solution here is to enable Remote Desktop access for your Office PC, which has the Greentree client (fat or thin doesn’t matter) installed. You can then install a Remote Desktop application on your iPad, connect to the Office PC and run the Greentree client as if you were sitting in front of the PC.

NB: You may need administrator assistance to deal with things like firewalls and VPN/Network configuration. The iPad has native connection for some type of VPN client, or you may need to consult your office’s firewall/router vendor.

Remote Desktop applications for the iPad are available from the Apple Store – they include Citrix Receiver, VMware View and PocketCloud (recommended).

You’ll also need a way to connect to the Office PC – WiFi or cellular.

Connect to your office network, configure the Remote Desktop client to connect to the office PC, and you’re done!

Win an iPad with Greentree GAME ON!
